Susan Zare

Zare is a German-Iranian presenter, journalist, media maker and musician living in Cologne. As the daughter of a Saarlander and an Iranian, she grew up with German and Persian culture and language and is committed to intercultural issues with great openness.

Zare studied musicology and languages and cultures of the Islamic world at the University of Cologne with a stay abroad in Iran and completed a journalistic traineeship at the radio station bigFM.

Susan Zare works regularly for various radio stations: as a narrator for features and in the editorial department of science and education and for the travel journal at Deutschlandfunk. Since 2009 she has been working for the radio station bigFM, and has also worked for Saarländischer Rundfunk, DLF Nova, WDR Cosmo and 1LIVE.

In her reports Zare covers social and environmental topics and music events, she also reported several times on topics from Iran.

Between 2016 and 2019, she moderated more than 100 panel discussions on the state elections in Berlin, Bavaria, NRW, Saarland, RLP with all major parties for the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung Berlin as part of “It’s your choice”. In 2018 and 2019, Zare worked as a moderator for the Federal Office for Migration & Refugees, moderating panel discussions in Berlin, Cologne, Munich and Frankfurt. She also moderated events for the State Media Authority of Saarland, the State Youth Ring of North Rhine-Westphalia, the award ceremony of the Federal President’s Story Contest in Magdeburg, Wiesbaden and Stuttgart, and the Intercultural Festivals of the International Students Association at the University of Cologne. Zare gave advanced training in rhetoric, stage moderation and interviewing at the Saarland State Media Authority, Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Volkshochschulverband and the Dermatologenverband Deutschland. In October 2020, Zare moderated the 5th Federal Conference of Migrant Organizations (BKMO) in Berlin, for the podcast and video series “Connecting Pieces. People with Immigration Histories Look at 30 Years of Reunification” by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Zare spoke with people with immigration biographies in 7 episodes. She occasionally moderates panel discussions in the German Bundestag.
